iMac: 27" and why i'm a believer.
I've been a PC user for the vast majority of my life, all the way back to 3.1. I've enjoyed each and every moment of it, with a few exceptions alone the road. Along the way though, i took a turn.. A turn towards a certain fruity flavoured machine, called the iMac
It started with a 20" iMac - this new found obsession has moved onto the 27" iMac. As a result, i'd like to share my thoughts on iMacs in general, the operating system and my shiney new toy.
The iMac is a simple machine, but crucially that is the beauty of it. The aesthetics are rivalled by no other all-in-one PC on the market, it's that single factor which draws allot of people in. But what makes people stay? Well the hardware and operating system are very much alined with each other, they hold the same ideals. Within no longer than an hour of sitting down with an iMac, having no previous editing experience at all. I was putting together (i'd say) admirable attempts at making my own videos, the bundled software iMovie made everything so effortless..
This for me is core of what makes both the hardware and software work in tandem, it's design to be something that you essentially:

I was putting together (i'd say) admirable attempts at making my own videos, the bundled software iMovie made everything so effortless..
This for me is core of what makes both the hardware and software work in tandem, it's design to be something that you essentially:
- 1) Put on a desk
- 2) Plug in power cable
- 3) Turn on
Then without much forethought or faff - you're editing pictures, videos, surfing and having an almost tactile experience with your computer. It really is no wonder it's the defacto platform of choice for photographers, graphic designers and video specialists. Because while iMovie and iPhoto give you the first step in, Aperture, Photoshop and Final Cut are there for the next. So it becomes very much a starting point for many people entering that world, not to mention that in general.. Applications like Photoshop and Final Cut are generally considered to be far more stable on OSX than Windows.
Now don't for a moment think i'm slating Microsoft and i'm some over-gauged Apple fanboy, i'm incredibly fond of Windows 7 at the same time. I just feel each platform offers a different level of experience, often appealing to different types of people.
By no means should OSX ever be used to game, some virulent iMac supporters will often say otherwise.. But trust me.. Because i'm right, they're wrong.. Sure my 27" iMac has an ATI 4670 within it's guts, it's still only suited for the casual side gaming wise. But Apple aren't particularly at fault for this, the manufacturing process for products they make is different from say an Acer Laptop, these beauties are cased within aluminium. It can't be easy to keep up with the constantly moving graphics industry, especially when it comes to tooling in the manufacturing process. Has to be noted, that the original aluminium iMac had to be pressed out in a car factory. As no other place could deal with sheets of aluminium that size.
This is of course only a short look into the iMac itself - and while i'm sure many of you are aware of aesthetics and the capabilities the machine. I hope it gives you a look into why i like them, why i'm willing to pay the price and why it should not just be a war against PC and MAC.. I feel they both can live separately, each one doing a better job in some areas the other lacks.. Yet both offering a good product to the consumer.
